The show was held at the theatre of Mason High School. About 700 tri-state residents came to watch the show. Local artists, UC students, and volunteer parents from the two local Chinese schools kicked off the show with choir singing, Pipa, dances and Jinghu, followed by a series of singing, dances, operas and instrument performances by the Anhui Art Troup.

Mr. Jay Shi, Principal of Greater Cincinnati Chinese School and member of Sichuan Friendship Association, and Mr. Hua Hu, Chairperson of Greater Cincinnati China Relief Committee, delivered the opening remarks followed by a call for silent condolences. The audience and the artists stood in silence for 3 minutes to remember those who died in the Sichuan earthquake. According to the latest figures, as many as 60,000 people died in the earthquake, 27,000 people reported missing and as many as 5 million people remain displaced.

Local residents and businesses poured out their support by donating to the China Relief Fund at the show.

A series of fundraising activities will follow as the tri-state communities continue to gain awareness of the magnitude of the impact the earthquake has brought to the people of Sichuan. The death toll from this quake has passed 51,000 as of today. Nearly 300,000 people were injured, and approximately 30,000 people are still missing. Thousands of homes and hundreds of schools collapsed, leaving millions of people displaced. As many as 7,000 classrooms from various schools collapsed, burying many students and teachers. Telecom services were disrupted. Roads, factories, and other infrastructure were also severely damaged. Total economic damage is estimated around US$10 billion.

In response to this natural disaster in China, the Greater Cincinnati Chinese-American communities, consisting of more than nine organizations, quickly joined force and form the China Relief Fund. Leaders and representatives of those organization convened on May 19th to discuss how the local Chinese communities can work together to raise relief fund to help the victims of the China earthquake. The purpose of the joint efforts is to raise the public awareness of the earthquake and the relief efforts. The Greater Cincinnati China Earthquake Relief Committee (GCCERC) was formed, consisting of 1-2 representatives from each Chinese organization. A China Earthquake Relief Fund has also been set up in the US bank to accept donations. All donations will go directly to the Chinese Red Cross to help victims from the earthquake. Other longer term programs, including establishing a scholarship program to provide financial aids to the students, were also discussed at the meeting.

A series of activities have started under the leadership of the Steering Committee. Greater Cincinnati Chinese School, Huaxia Chinese School in Mason, and Univeristy of Cincinnati Chinese Students & Scholars Association – three of the participating organizations – have been raising money on their campuses. Donation boxes have also been sent to local Chinese restaurants. The highlight of this Relief Fund Campaign is a charity show to be held 7:30-9:00pm this coming Saturday at Mason High School. The show features Chinese traditional dances, folk songs and Chinese opera, performed by visiting artists from Anhui Province in China as well local performers. All proceeds will go to the China Earthquake Relief Fund. The details of this performance will be presented by the person in charge, Ms. Qihong Liao

The GCCERC also has two finance persons on board, to safeguard all donations, and to ensure that all donations will go directly to the Chinese Red Cross and to help victims from the earthquake.

Steering Committee Meeting Notes - 2008/05/18

Meeting Memo May 18, 2008
Greater Cincinnati China Earthquake Relief Committee

Sponsored by: Hua Xia Chinese School at Mason, Greater Cincinnati Chinese School, Sichuan Friendship Association, UC Chinese Student & We had a very productive meeting. First, all the organizations have introduced their own efforts on fundraising. On behalf of the local Chinese community, GCCS has helped to set up 12-15 donation boxes in local Chinese restaurants and Chinese merchandises. GCCS and Huaxia Chinese school have done fundraising within their own schools. UC-CSSA has started fundraising on campus. Other organizations also did a lot efforts on fundraising.

Second, all participants agreed with that the next step is to reach out a broad community. So, the Greater Cincinnati China Earthquake Relief Committee (GCCERC) was formed by all the local organizations. A GCCERC steering committee has been selected, and it includes 1 or 2 people from every organization. The members' names and their contacts are listed in the attachment.

Third, the GCCERC steering committee has identified two important events for fundraising. One is the Charity Show and the other one is to pledge donation in local community. Liao Qihong and Shen Mi are leading the Charity Show. GCCS, Huaxia Chinese School and UC-CSSA are responsible for community donation event. There is a lot of preparation work should be done before these two events. The detailed action items, owner and time line are listed in the attachment.

Fourth, a fundraising account "China Relief Fund" has been setup in US Bank.

Fifth, I forgot to mention this in our meeting. Here I volunteer myself, Bingzhi Shi, and Huaping Wu to be chair and co-chairs. Other subteam leaders are listed in the attachment. If you have any objections, please feel free let us know.

Our goal is to have a successful fundraising. We want to show American community that we have one voice, one image and one Chinese community.

Thank you very much for your time and efforts!

Hua
